Equipment For Moving Heavy Pianos

Whenever anyone has a heavy instrument it is inevitable that it will need to be shifted at one time or another. Piano moving equipment comes in several forms to make life easier for those lucky enough to own one. Piano wheels or a piano moving dolly means that the instrument can be shifted very easily and probably by just one person in most instances.

These small accessories have certainly made their mark for anyone who has to shift around instruments at short notice. Before they came onto the scene, a team of several people had to be brought in to do the shifting and this could be expensive and time consuming. But by having one of these superb little accessories to hand, the problem can be sorted out once and for all.

They come in several different versions too. Instruments Of the ‘grand’ variety which normally have three spindly legs are probably the most difficult ones to reposition. Relocating them to other rooms or buildings put these legs under immense strain and the instrument may be damaged beyond repair.

The accessory to be used in this instance has a three cornered set of wheels. Each arm is adjustable and the idea is that they are pulled out until they sit exactly beneath each leg on the instrument. Once this has been achieved, the arms are fixed in position so that nothing is left to chance. Then the relocation can start in earnest.

Upright varieties have their own design too and they either have the instrument sitting directly on top of them, or a separate set of wheels is placed at either end of the instrument. Most of these instruments reside in schools or church halls and the owners may find that leaving them atop the accessory makes life easier for those days when the instrument has to be relocated.

The older design of accessory was rather spider like but these days there are newer designs coming to the fore. V-shaped set ups means that the design is much more stable and less strain is put on the grand instruments when they are being shifted.

Of course, it is obvious that some of these instruments are extremely heavy and awkward. Being usually quite valuable too, it is best to avoid any situation where other furnishing, floors or indeed people are put at risk. But the good thing about these accessories is that they can be used by just one person in some instances.

Some of the larger instruments will never be shifted of course since once in situ; most people would shy away from ever putting them somewhere else. Even some homes or establishments which are being sold often remain with the instrument in the music room or hall so that nothing has to be relocated. With the help of these clever little accessories though, valued and much loved instruments can now travel relatively easily to the new destination without too much upset. This is particularly useful for family heirlooms and the like.
